Superintendent's Message - October 2019

Pleasants County Schools is nearing the end of the first nine weeks, which will be October 11th, 2019. Report cards will be sent home with students on October 18th. Many educational programs continue to be provided throughout our schools. The continued effort with Math4Life has been a positive addition. Each school’s curriculum and leadership teams have completed their school’s 2019-2020 strategic plan, which outlines their specific reading/language arts and mathematics goals for this year. Our schools are continuing to guide students academically to reach their full potential. Student GSA results and Lexile/Quantile scores have been sent home to parents. The county central office and each school continue to work together and provide valuable professional development. More +

West Virginia Board of Education to Host Listening Tour

The West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) will host six meetings at locations around the state as a part of a 2019 listening tour. The purpose of the tour is to provide an opportunity for members of the public to inform the work, processes and policies of the WVBE that support high-quality learning. More +

"Spirit and Pride" Shirt Sale

The “Spirit and Pride” shirt sale begins today. Children will bring home an order packet. You can return orders to school in the packet (pay by check or money order to Spirit and Pride) OR use the online ordering option and pay by debit or credit. Orders arrive to BES in about a month.

Immunization Requirements

Any student entering 2nd, 7th or 12th grades next year are required to show proof of a dental and HealthCheck comprehensive health examination prior to entry into school. Students in 7th or 12th grades are also required to have the Tdap and meningitis shots to enter. Please make an appointment with your child’s Doctor and Dentist to make sure they have completed the examination requirements and provide proof to the school. If your student has had a recent doctor visit (within a year of August 2019 or dentist visit within 6 months of August 2019, a copy of that can be brought to school. Pre-K Pre-Registration and Enrollment

Pre-K pre-registration and enrollment for the 2019-20 school year will be on February 25-March 8 between 8:30am-3:00pm. Call 304-684-2215 to pre-register and receive a registration packet. Enrollments will be conducted on May 20th and 21st at Belmont Elementary and St. Marys Elementary Schools by Appointment. More +

School Mall Fundraiser

On 1/7/2019 we sent home packets for the "School Mall." This is the program where students can turn in booklets with addresses of friends and family who will later be mailed a magazine. The school recieves money for each completed booklet and we als orecieve money from items that are ordered from the magazine. There is no obligation for anyone to order from that magazine. Students will win a prize for a completed booklet and be entered to win other prizes for simply filling out the booklet.

2nd Grade Wins State Contest

In November, Sherri Murphy’s Second Grade Class submitted an ornament for First Lady Kathy Justice’s Ornament Contest for the tree that is displayed in the Capitol Building. Winners were selected from four Categories- K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The West Virginia Department of Education has recently eliminated the text message alert feature associated with WVSnowDay/school closings website due to technical issues related to service providers. Pleasants County will continue to use SchoolMessenger to report closings.

NTI- "Snow Day Packs"

On Friday, December 7 your child will bring home five (5) Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) Packets- also called “Snow Day Packs.” These are “Re-Imagined Instructional Days” and will include work that will take the place of the 6 through 10 cancelled school days due to weather or snow during this school year. WVDE math4life Campaign

We are pleased to announce the establishment of math4life: West Virginia's Pre-K—Grade 12 Campaign for Mathematics Achievement. While there is much work to be done to support mathematics achievement in our state, the West Virginia Department of Education and collaborative partners are committed to support a comprehensive effort to elevate mathematics achievement for all students. Information is provided here detailing the states efforts - a true PreK-Grade 12 Campaign for Mathematics Achievement - to close the mathematics achievement gap. A five-year external evaluation will occur to determine the short and long-term impacts of this initiative. The contractors for this evaluation will be selected via an RFP that will be available in the future.
