Press Release 1/8/2021

Following Gov. Jim Justice's Announcement and following the WVDE updated guidance… Pleasants County Schools will be returning to IN-PERSON Learning for Pre-K through 8th Grade on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021. Grades 9-12 will only return if Pleasants County is not in the RED on the WV DHHR Covid Map. If Pleasants County is red on the WV DHHR Covid Map, Grades 9-12 students will work “remotely”. When students return to “in-person” they will attend school in person on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Wednesdays will continue to be a remote learning day for all students.

Meals will be served for remote learning students (i.e. high school students on RED weeks) with 5-day meal packs on Mondays from 11:00-12:00 noon @ St. Marys High School (by the kitchen).

COVID-19 Screening

As you are probably aware, increased cases of Covid 19 are happening in our county and around us. Please do not send your children to school if they are sick. Attendance Guidance for 20-21 School Year

Traditionally, attendance has been based solely on a student’s physical presence. Now, the education of students is taking place in a variety of methods so physical presence may be only one of many measures of attendance. All West Virginia State Laws concerning attendance are still in effect for the 2020-2021 school year.

As we welcome in 2021, Pleasants County Schools will continue to keep student safety our number one priority when decisions are made during this winter in regards to school closings. WV Virtual School Announces Optional Orientation Sessions

The WV Virtual School staff will be hosting student orientations this week to help students transition to online learning. All three sessions are the same as to offer more than one opportunity for families to participate. We have a few helpful hints and will also show students how to login to their classes. Links to the sessions can be found below. Attendance is not mandatory. During these times, however, we are here to help and wanted to provide this opportunity for students and their families.

Summer Feeding

Summer Feeding ends this Friday, August 28th. To allow our staff to attend mandatory training, Wednesday’s breakfast and lunch will be sent home on Tuesday, August 25th. Pick up continues to be from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm. We look forward to the beginning of school and feeding students regardless of where their learning happens: in-person, remotely, or virtually.

2020 Virtual Energy Express

Pleasants Co. and WVU Extension are providing students an opportunity to participate in virtual summer learning maintenance through the Energy Express program. The program will be June 22-July 31. The program can accept students going into Kindergarten–8th grade. More +

No Summer Feeding June 9th

Due to Election Day on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, there will be no summer feeding meals at St. Marys Elementary School that day. Curbside pick-up will resume Wednesday, June 10th from noon to 1 pm. More +

Immunization, Well-Child Physical and Dental Exam Requirements

Meal Distribution Tuesday May 26th

Due to the Memorial Day Holiday weekend, meal distribution for the last week of school will be on TUESDAY, MAY 26. Meal boxes will be available at our four distribution sites from 11:00 am -noon at St. Marys High School, Pleasants County Middle School, God's Glory church parking lot and the Arvilla Community Building. This will conclude our regular school year feeding program with our summer feeding program beginning June 1, 2020. Summer feeding will be a daily hot meal pick up for lunch and a grab-and-go style breakfast for the following day. Curbside pickup will be available at ST. MARYS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, Monday through Friday, from noon- 1 pm. Our summer feeding program will continue until August 11, 2020 to compliment the Pandemic-EBT cards from the DHHR to support our families in meeting the nutritional needs of our students. Wellness, Body and Online Safety

With schools shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever it is important that children continue to receive information related to online safety, body safety and wellness. SHIELD (www.shieldwv.com) has developed the following videos to provide children and teens in WV with the information they need to stay safe and reach out for help if they need it. Superintendent's Update 4/30

Due to Governor Jim Justice closing school through the end of the year, Pleasants County Schools will continue to provide 5-day meal boxes on Monday’s from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon). Also, Pleasants County Schools will continue to provide educational opportunities through digital learning and paper packets to our students. If you need paper packets, you may pick them up at each school’s front entrance on Monday, May 4th from 11:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m. Students may also “turn in” all paper packets that are complete on May 4th. Computer and Paper Packet Distribution

If you requested a computer or paper packet from your child’s school, you need to arrange pickup on Wednesday, March 25th from 10:30am-12:00pm at their school of attendance.

Pickup Locations:
BES – Front Entrance closest to the playground
SMES – Front Entrance on the playground side
PCMS – Front entrance by the main office
SMHS – Front entrance by the main office
If you haven’t already done so, please contact your child’s school in regards to their educational plan. This educational plan has been prepared for each child through Friday, April 17th.

Meal Distribution

The Office of Child Nutrition will be offering Meal Distributions each school day from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon. Please note that to meet state requirements, students must be present to receive meals. Each day a lunch will be provided as well as the next day’s breakfast. This Monday only, each child will be given a breakfast only while we work to adjust our inventory and methods of preparation.

At each Meal Distribution site, families are asked to create a “drive-thru” line to accept food through the car window. This will allow us to follow social distancing practices, protecting both our families and employees.

Meal Distribution sites will be at the following locations:

-Arvilla Community building on Arvilla Road

-St. Marys High School- families should go to the back parking lot towards the VoAg Department hallway entering the south entrance and exiting through the north entrance

-God’s Glory Church at 7300 Pike Rd St. Marys WV 26170

-Pleasants County Middle School- families will follow the student drop off traffic pattern and meals will be handed out near the entrance of the last hallway of Belmont Elementary School

-Select Energy located at 7994 South Pleasants Highway

SCHOOL CLOSED

In reference to the Covid-19 situation and our school system: Upon guidance from the WV Governor and state medical officials, all schools in West Virginia will be closed beginning Monday, March 16th until further notice. Furthermore, all extracurricular activities and any other after school activities have been cancelled until April 10th. Students will be in school until the end of the day Friday, March 13th. West Virginia Board of Education to Host Listening Tour

The West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) will host six meetings at locations around the state as a part of a 2019 listening tour. The purpose of the tour is to provide an opportunity for members of the public to inform the work, processes and policies of the WVBE that support high-quality learning. More +

Immunization Requirements

Any student entering 2nd, 7th or 12th grades next year are required to show proof of a dental and HealthCheck comprehensive health examination prior to entry into school. Students in 7th or 12th grades are also required to have the Tdap and meningitis shots to enter. Please make an appointment with your child’s Doctor and Dentist to make sure they have completed the examination requirements and provide proof to the school. If your student has had a recent doctor visit (within a year of August 2019 or dentist visit within 6 months of August 2019, a copy of that can be brought to school. The West Virginia Department of Education has recently eliminated the text message alert feature associated with WVSnowDay/school closings website due to technical issues related to service providers. Pleasants County will continue to use SchoolMessenger to report closings.

WVDE math4life Campaign

We are pleased to announce the establishment of math4life: West Virginia's Pre-K—Grade 12 Campaign for Mathematics Achievement. While there is much work to be done to support mathematics achievement in our state, the West Virginia Department of Education and collaborative partners are committed to support a comprehensive effort to elevate mathematics achievement for all students. Information is provided here detailing the states efforts - a true PreK-Grade 12 Campaign for Mathematics Achievement - to close the mathematics achievement gap. A five-year external evaluation will occur to determine the short and long-term impacts of this initiative. The contractors for this evaluation will be selected via an RFP that will be available in the future.

Welcome to the opening of another school year! As you are aware, Pleasants County Schools take great pride in maintaining a tradition of excellence. As superintendent, I challenge our faculties to take ownership of their schools, to foster a school climate that is nurturing and a culture that does not accept failure. I encourage our students to become actively involved in their studies and in the extracurricular activities at their school. On the same token, I encourage parents to play an active role in their child's education both at home and at school.
